Indie Film Shot on Phones Sweeps the Festival Circuit
The most decorated film of this festival season was shot on three phones, lit with hardware-store lamps, and made by seven friends for $48,000. It has now taken the top prize at three major festivals in a row.
The drama, set across one night in a 24-hour laundromat, turned its constraints into a style: intimate framing, available light, and performances captured in long unbroken takes because the crew couldn't afford coverage.
The bidding war
After its third festival win, a streaming bidding war pushed the acquisition price into eight figures — roughly 250 times the production budget. The director has committed to splitting backend points evenly across the entire crew.
“Nobody told us what a movie is supposed to cost, so we didn't spend it,” the director said at the awards ceremony.
A theatrical run begins next month before the film lands on streaming this winter.
