Open-Source AI Model Tops Every Benchmark on a Laptop GPU

A twelve-person open-source collective just published a 7-billion-parameter language model that tops reasoning benchmarks previously owned by systems two orders of magnitude larger — and it runs comfortably on a consumer laptop GPU.

The team credits a new curriculum-distillation technique: instead of training on raw web text, the model learns from synthetic reasoning traces generated and filtered by a committee of larger open models.

Why this matters

Fully offline operation means private, free AI assistance with no data leaving the device. Within hours of release, the weights had been downloaded over a million times and ported to phones, browsers and a smart fridge.

Enterprise labs have been quick to point out benchmark caveats, but early independent evals largely confirm the headline numbers.
