First Human Trial Reverses Type 1 Diabetes in 11 of 12 Patients
Eleven of twelve participants in a first-in-human trial are now producing their own insulin, one full year after receiving gene-edited islet cells — with zero immunosuppressant drugs.
The cells were engineered with a cloaking edit that prevents the autoimmune attack that causes Type 1 diabetes, allowing transplanted tissue to survive in patients whose immune systems destroyed their original islet cells decades ago.

Trial participants describe the change in disarmingly ordinary terms: sleeping through the night, eating a meal without arithmetic, forgetting where they put their glucose monitor.
A 400-patient Phase 3 trial opens recruitment this quarter across nine countries. Researchers caution that durability beyond one year remains the key open question — but the one-year data exceeded every pre-registered endpoint.
