Transfer Record Shattered Twice in One Chaotic Deadline Day

Deadline day delivered the most chaotic nine hours in transfer history. The world record fee, untouched for eleven years, fell in the early afternoon — then fell again before midnight.

The second deal, worth a reported €280 million plus add-ons, came together so fast that the player's medical was conducted in a private airport lounge between connecting flights.

The money behind it

Analysts point to new broadcast deals and sovereign investment as the fuel. Club shops crashed under shirt pre-orders within an hour of the announcement, and the club says the player's image rights alone could recoup a third of the fee.

Rival managers were less impressed, with one calling the day “financial theatre.” The window is now shut; the football, mercifully, resumes Saturday.
